Joyworks: The Story of Marquette Electronics
Published in Paperback by Milwaukee County Historical Society (June, 2002)
Author: Michael J. Cudahy
Average review score:

One of America's great companies
A great book for a great look into one of America's great companies through the eyes of the man who founded it. Witty and funny. This book is an example of what is possible to achieve in this great Country with a little smarts and some courage.

Well written, informative AND funny . . .
This book is written with wisdom, warmth and humor. Both a memoir and a business how-to, it's a must read for young entrepreneurs. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend.

The MEI I used to know
In this book Michael Cudahy remembers the long path to success taken by Marquette Electronics. The early days are given a great deal of ink, demonstrating the determination Mr. Cudahy is known for, including his childhood and young adulthood. The story continues through the 1970's as MEI broke new ground in the medical electronics business. As the company develops into a major force with acquisitions on two continents, the issues and problems of growth are discussed in depth. Mike spends time discussing the various leaders in place prior to the GE buyout and his reasons for selling the company. As a prologue he brings the reader up to date on his activites since MEI.

Catholic Theology in the University: Source of Wholeness (Marquette Studies in Theology, No 17)
Published in Paperback by Marquette Univ Pr (December, 1999)
Author: Virginia M. Shaddy
Average review score:

A wonderful treatment of Theology
It too bad that this talented author devoted herself to such arcane topics. Had she exerted the same effort with more popular themes she would have easily qualified for a Pulitzer. This text is so perfectly edited I challenge anyone to find substantial fault anywhere between its covers. Bravo Virginia!

Faith Adoring the Mystery: Reading the Bible With St. Ephraem the Syrian (Pere Marquette Lecture in Theology, 1997)
Published in Hardcover by Marquette Univ Pr (March, 1997)
Author: Sidney Harrison Griffith
Average review score:

An important study of Ephraem
This is a very useful lecture by an important student of the works of Ephraem the Syrian. Professor Griffith offers a brief overview of the life of Ephraem and then focuses on his treatment of Scripture. Anyone interested in Syriac Christianity or the history of Christian interpretation of the Bible should have this small volume on his shelf.

Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet (Famous Explorers)
Published in Library Binding by Powerkids Pr (January, 2003)
Author: Jeff Donaldson-Forbes
Average review score:

Short and concise and very attractive
This thin book (20 pages, not including the table of contents, index, etc.) is a wonderful introduction to the lives of Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet, famous explorers of the upper Mississippi River. It is part of the Famous Explorers series, and is a very attractive book. The pages include many colorful illustrations, and the pages are decorated, so that the book looks like a book from long ago.

Due to its length, the book is not in-depth on the men or their journey, but it does cover all of the essentials in a clear and concise manner. The book, is highly attractive, which will help it appeal to the younger reader, and it is informative in a short and easy-to-read manner, which will appeal to readers of any age. I highly recommend this book!

Reason and Existenz: Five Lectures (Marquette Studies in Philosophy, No 11)
Published in Paperback by Marquette Univ Pr (July, 1997)
Authors: Karl Jaspers and Pol Vandevelde
Average review score:

Gem of a Book

Jasper's book is one of those books that you are so impressed by you work to memorize and apply in all thinking processes. His discription of existentialism in one's chaotic center of concealed knowledge with how we perceive reality is essential and the foundation behind all thinking in philosophy, science and religion.

Jasper speaks of all thinking within a horizon that can be transcended. All horizons being within a horizon he names "the encompassing," which can be seen in two modes, as all Being in itself, or as all Being within which we are. It is here within which we are, we perceive reality in three ways: by empirical existence, consciousness and spirit. In turn we use reason to formulate, objectify and create absolutes, yet at the same time we need to use our irrational concealed knowledge, that is, the dark ground and center, of all modes, the existenz, to allow our reason to be open and apart from mere intellectual indifference. All demarcations are relative, yet existenz without reason is unrelated to Transcendence. Each without the other loses the genuine continuity of Being, and therefore, the reliability ceases to be authentic.

Reason clarifies our existenz, while our existenz gives content to our reason. Jaspers also goes into the idea of communicating truth, the prioity and limits of ratonal thought and compares the ideas of Nietzsche and Kiergaard. The book is brilliant.

Seeing Jazz: Artists and Writers on Jazz
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (October, 1997)
Authors: Marquette Folley-Cooper, Deborah MacAnic, Janice McNeil, Elizabeth Goldson, Robert O'Meally, Smithsonian Institution Travel, and Clark Terry
Average review score:

A perfect gift for art and jazz lovers alike.
This is a beautiful book in every way. The selection of art juxtaposed with the intriguing range of literary excerpts combine to make the reader do exactly what the editors want: to "see" jazz. I bought extra copies as Christmas gifts.

To the Greater Glory: A Psychological Study of Ignatian Spirituality (Marquette Studies in Theology, No 16)
Published in Paperback by Marquette Univ Pr (December, 1999)
Author: W. W. Meissner
Average review score:

21st Century hagiography
Most lives of saints consist of autobiographical writings (few believers can stand those, too close to home deficiencies) and third person testimonies of sanctity (can make an unbeliever out of the most trenchant spiritual reader). This one breaks the mold. A jesuit psychologist deconstructs Ignatius psyche and out of the fragments he finds the father of his order: human, problematic, a saint for our times and place...not to mention our neurosis. Recommended without the couch.
